Bleeding like period pregnancy
Pregnancy - Facts

Bleeding like period pregnancy.

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and started to bleed a little last night. It scares me. What should I do?

Call your doctor about any bleeding; he or she may want you to have an ultrasound. This early in pregnancy, you are probably worrying about having a miscarriage.

I'm worried that I won't know when to call my doctor if I have any problems during my pregnancy. Are there warning signs I should know about?

If you think there is something to be concerned about, ask for help. General warning signs include the following:

  • vaginal bleeding
  • painful urination
  • severe abdominal pain
  • loss of fluid from the vagina, usually a gushing of fluid but sometimes a trickle or continual wetness
  • a big change in the movement of the baby or a lack of fetal movement
  • high fever (more than 101.6F; 38.7C)
  • chills
  • severe vomiting or inability to keep food or liquids down
  • blurring of vision ...
  • severe swelling of the face or fingers
  • a severe headache or a headache that won't go away
  • an injury or accident serious enough to give you concern abtiut
the well-being of your pregnancy, such as a fall or an  :
    automobile accident

pregnancy is not unusual and doesn't always mean a problem. About 1 woman in 5 bleeds sometime in early pregnancy.

What causes the bleeding?

Usually we cannot give a definite answer as to what causes it, but we do know that it is not usually a problem. If you experience any vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, call your doctor.

I called my doctor and told him I had some bleeding, and he told me to rest and not to have intercourse. Isn't there some medicine I can take or something I can do to stop the bleeding and make sure everything is going to be OK?

Your doctor gave you good advice there isn't any surgery or medicine that will stop the bleeding. If your concern or your doctor's concern is high, he or she may schedule you for an ultrasound. An ultrasound won't stop anything from happening; it may give some reassurance, but you may still bleed. You must discuss a course of treatment or actions to take with your doctor, who knows your past history and individual situation.

If I go to bed with bleeding, will that help?

Contact your doctor before you do anything. Follow his or her instructions. Going to bed and resting may help. Your doctor knows your medical and pregnancy history, so follow his or her advice.
