Genetic Counseling And Testing.
I'm pregnant for the first time and want everything to be all right. Do I need genetic counseling? Probably not. Individuals who need genetic counseling are usually those who have had a malformed infant, those with a family history of inherited diseases, women who have had recurrent miscarriages (usually three or more) and women who will be 35 or older at the time of birth.
What happens when a couple goes for genetic counseling? You and your partner participate in this counseling together. The counselor asks detailed questions about your medical history, other pregnancies, medication usage and the family medical history of you and your partner. If it is necessary to do chromosome tests, blood samples are taken from both of you. You are advised about the potential for problems in a pregnancy.
