Fetoscopy.
What's the test that uses some kind of scope to look at the baby? You are probably referring to fetoscopy. It is performed on the fetus and placenta while both are still inside your uterus. It provides a view of the baby and placenta.
What is fetoscopy used for? The doctor can see the baby through the fetoscope and detect some abnormalities and problems. This very specialized test is not performed often.
How is the procedure done? A small incision is made in the mother's abdomen, and a scope similar to the one used in laparoscopy is placed through the abdomen into the uterus. The doctor uses the fetoscope to examine the fetus and placenta.
Should I have fetoscopy? If your doctor suggests fetoscopy to you, discuss the reason with him or her. This test is not done often but is used when it is necessary to look directly at the fetus or placenta.
Are there risks to fetoscopy? Risk of miscarriage is 3 to 4% with this procedure. Only someone experienced with the technique should perform this test.
