Biophysical Profile.

My doctor mentioned doing a biophysical profile on my baby. What is it?
It is a comprehensive test that examines the fetus while it is still in your uterus. It helps determine the baby's health.

Why is a biophysical profile done?
The test is useful in evaluating an infant with intrauterine-growth restriction, when the mother-to-be is diabetic, with a pregnancy in which the baby doesn't move very much, in high-risk pregnancies and in overdue pregnancies.

How is the test performed?
Ultrasound, external monitors and observation are used to make the different measurements.

How is the test scored?
Each area is given a score of 0, 1 or 2. A total is obtained by adding all five scores together. The higher the score, the better the baby's condition. A low score may indicate problems.

If a baby has a low score, what can be done?
The situation will be evaluated the baby may need to be delivered immediately. The test may be repeated at intervals. It may be necessary to repeat the test the following day. Your doctor will evaluate the scores, your health and the pregnancy before making any decisions.

Fetal Blood Sampling
I recently read about fetal blood sampling during labor. What is this test?
It is another way of evaluating how well a baby is tolerating the stress of labor.

How is fetal blood sampling during labor done?
Your membranes must be ruptured, and you cervix must be dilated at least 2cm. Your physician places an instrument inside you to make a small nick in the baby's scalp. The baby's blood is collected in a small tube, and the pH (acidity) is checked.

What can the doctor learn from fetal blood sampling?
The pH level can help determine whether the baby is having trouble during labor and is under stress. The test helps the physician decide whether labor can continue or if you need a C-section.
