Pregnancy Medications - Treatments

Pregnancy Medications Drugs.

When we talk about pregnancy medications, we're not referring only to prescriptions your doctor may write for you. We're also talking about over-the-counter preparations, vitamins, minerals and herbs. Any of these substances may affect a developing baby. What may seem like only a little to you could pass through the placenta to your developing fetus.

If possible, discuss different medications you must take for medical conditions before you get pregnant. If you were unable to do this, discuss all medications (prescription and over-the-counter) you take on a regular basis at your first prenatal visit. You may need to adjust your dosage, or you may have to stop taking a particular substance. However, never stop taking any medication that you take for a chronic problem without first consulting your doctor! Some medication cannot and should not be stopped during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor before making any decisions about medication use.

I've read that some of the medications I take can affect my growing baby. What are they and what are the effects?
Various substances you ingest affect your developing baby in many ways. See the chart on page 96, which lists some substances and their effects.

When should I discuss with my doctor the different medications I must take for my medical conditions?
Ideally, you will have had this discussion before you got pregnant. If you were unable to do this, discuss all medications (prescription and over-the-counter) you take on a regular basis at your first prenatal visit. You may need to adjust your dosage or stop taking a particular substance.

Can't I just stop taking the medicine before I visit the doctor? I'm not that sick.
Never stop taking any medication that you take for a chronic problem without first consulting your doctor! Some medication cannot and should not be stopped during pregnancy.

There are so many different kinds of medicine. How can I remember which are safe to take?
You don't have to remember them all. Ask your doctor about those that pertain to your own special care. Much of the information in this chapter may not apply to you, but it's good information to have at hand. The important thing is to call your doctor about any medication before you take it. And remember to read labels!
