Toxic Streptococcus A.I've heard a lot lately about toxic streptococcus A, the flesh-eating bacteria. What is it? Toxic streptococcus A is a bacterial infection that usually starts in a cut on the skin, not as a sore throat. It spreads very quickly and can soon involve the entire body
How does it get into my system? Bacteria can enter through a very small scratch, scrape or cut in the skin. The skin then turns red and becomes swollen, painful and infected very quickly. What are the symptoms of toxic streptococcus A? Symptoms include the following:
- fever above 102F (39CJ
- an inflamed cut or scratch
- flulike symptoms
- unusually cold extremities (feet, hands, legs and arms)
Is there anything I can do to prevent toxic strep A? Yes. Any time you cut or scratch yourself, clean the affected area with soap and water, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. All are safe to use during pregnancy. After careful washing, apply antibiotic cream or ointment (available over the counter) to the area. Use a light bandage, if necessary. Keep the area clean, and reapply antibiotic ointment as needed. These same measures can and should be used with every member of your family.
