Pregnancy AllergiesWill my allergies cause problems during pregnancy? Your allergies may change during pregnancy. Sometimes they get worse; sometimes they improve.
What can I do for my allergies while I'm pregnant? Drink plenty of fluid, especially during hot weather. If you're sensitive to certain foods, be careful about what you eat. Avoid anything you might be sensitive to, such as animals or cigarette smoke.
Can I take my regular allergy medications while I'm pregnant? Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication, whether it's a prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medication. Don't assume it's OK. It's safer and easier to ask ahead of time rather than take a chance with a medication.
Pregnancy Nasal ProblemsMy nose has been stuffed up ever since I got pregnant. Is this normal? Some women complain of nasal stuffiness or nosebleeds during pregnancy. We believe these occur because circulation changes caused by hormonal changes cause mucous membranes of the nose and nasal passages to swell and to bleed more easily.
What can I do about my stuffed up nose? Do not use decongestants or nasal sprays to relieve stuffiness without first asking your doctor. Many are combinations of several medications that you should not use during pregnancy. Try a humidifier to relieve stuffiness. Increase your fluid intake, and use a gentle lubricant, such as petroleum jelly. Discuss it at a prenatal visit if these remedies don't provide relief.
