Bacterial Vaginosis. What is bacterial vaginosis? I've heard it can cause problems for pregnant women. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection that affects pregnant and non pregnant women. Some researchers estimate that up to 20% of all pregnant women have BV. It increases a pregnant woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby or of going into premature labor. It occurs when bacteria that can cause you problems multiply due to suppression or killing of good bacteria. Most women are not routinely screened for BV. What are the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis? It is possible to have BV without any symptoms, but symptoms you may notice include the following: - mild vaginal irritation
- a fishy odor
- increased creamy discharge from the vagina
How can I be tested for BV? Your doctor can do a vaginal swab if he or she suspects BV. What is the treatment for bacterial vaginosis? Creams and oral antibiotics are used to treat BV. Treatment may increase a woman's chances of carrying her baby to full term.
