Some Pregnancy Precautions.
I don't usually use sunscreen, but a friend suggested it's important during pregnancy. Why? Sunscreen lessens the likelihood of getting the mask of pregnancy, which is a darkening of skin pigment on cheeks, forehead and chin. Use products with SPF 15 or higher. If you're prone to acne breakouts, use a water-based or oil-free product.
I like to look tan all the time, so I use a tanning booth. This won't harm my baby, will it? Researchers have not studied the effects on a growing fetus when a pregnant woman lies in a tanning booth. Until we know that there is no reason for concern, avoid this activity while you're pregnant.
Someone said I shouldn't bathe during pregnancy, that it's better to shower. Is this true? There is no medical reason to choose showering over bathing during pregnancy. In the last few weeks of pregnancy, as you get bigger, you must be careful about slipping in the shower or the tub. If you think your water has broken (ruptured membranes], your doctor may recommend that you don't bathe.
I like to sit in a hot tub after I exercise, but I read I shouldn't while I'm pregnant. Why? Your baby relies on you to maintain correct body temperature. Research has shown that an elevated temperature for an extended time may harm a developing fetus, so for this reason, avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and spas during pregnancy.
I've always heard that a pregnant woman shouldn't have her hair colored or get a permanent. Is there any real reason to avoid these? No. It's probably a good idea to avoid these activities during the 1st trimester, if you have morning sickness. The fumes from the hair dye or the permanent solution could make you feel ill.
I love to have a massage because it relaxes me so much. Can I continue to have massages while I'm pregnant? It's probably OK to have a massage during pregnancy. You may find it more difficult as your pregnancy progresses and you get bigger. If you want to have a massage when you are further along in your pregnancy, lie on your side instead of on your stomach or back. Always be careful not to get overheated in any activity.
Is it OK to use the microwave during my pregnancy? We don't know for sure if there is danger to your pregnancy from being around a microwave oven, so follow the directions provided with your microwave. It's a good idea not to stand next to or directly in front of it while it's in use.
Is it all right to douche during pregnancy? No. Most doctors agree douching can be dangerous during pregnancy.
What's the problem with douching during pregnancy? Using a douche may cause an infection or bleeding or even break your bag of waters (rupture your membranes). It can cause more serious problems, such as an air embolus. An air embolus results when air gets into your circulation from the pressure of the douche. It is rare but can be a serious problem.
I usually have electrolysis to remove facial hair. Can I have this done during pregnancy? No one knows for sure whether this procedure is safe. Because no information is available, wait until after your baby is born to have facial hair removed.

When I was 15, I got a tattoo on my shoulder, but I want to have it removed now. My dermatologist told me to wait till after the baby is born. Why? Many tattoos are removed using lasers, and we are unsure how safe it might be for you to have this done during pregnancy. Wait until after your baby is born to have it removed.
I just got a gift certificate for an herbal wrap, and I'm 14 weeks' pregnant. Should I wait to have it until after my baby is born? Definitely wait until after your baby is born to have an herbal wrap. Being wrapped in hot towels will cause your body to become very heated, which is not advisable during pregnancy.
Can I continue to use my electric blanket now that I'm pregnant? There has been controversy about using electric blankets during pregnancy. At this time, no one knows the answer to this question. Until we know more, the safest thing to do is not to use an electric blanket but to find other ways to stay warm, such as with down comforters or extra blankets.
