Now that I know I'm pregnant, I'm excited about wearing maternity clothes. When will I need them?
It's hard to predict exactly when you'll need to start wearing maternity clothes. You may now need plus size maternity clothing. You may have some clothes that are loose enough to wear for a while. You might be able to wear some of your partner's shirts. Or use a rubber band to expand the waist of pants and jeans. Hook one loop of the band around the button; pass it through the buttonhole, then hook the other end of the band around the button. Instant waistband expansion!
A rule of thumb to follow is when you become uncomfortable wearing your regular clothes, it's time to start wearing maternity clothes.
Are there any points I should keep in mind when selecting maternity clothes?
Choose natural fabrics when possible avoid synthetic fabrics. During pregnancy, your metabolic rate increases, and you may feel warmer than usual. Wear fabrics that breathe, such as cotton in the summer, and layer your clothing in winter.
My friend told me that I should wear special maternity underwear while I'm pregnant. What did she mean?
Undergarments that add support to your abdomen, breasts or legs may make you feel more comfortable during pregnancy. These undergarments include maternity bras, nursing bras, maternity panties and maternity support hose. Choose panties and support hose with a cotton crotch.
What are maternity bras?
Maternity bras are designed to provide your enlarging breasts with the extra support they need during pregnancy. They have wider sides and stretchier backs than regular bras. They usually have four sets of hooks on the back, instead of two or three, providing more room for you to grow.
Can't I just wear my normal bra in a larger size?
It's probably better to buy a maternity bra. They can help combat the sagging of your breasts, which is associated with pregnancy.
What is a nursing bra?
A nursing bra has cups that open so you can breastfeed without having to get undressed. Buy a nursing bra only if you plan to breastfeed your baby. You won't need one if you bottle feed.
When should I buy a nursing bra?
Wait until the final weeks of your pregnancy; don't buy one before the 36th week. It may be difficult to get a correct fit before then.
How will I know a nursing bra will fit correctly?
Choose a nursing bra with about a finger's width of space between any part of the cup and your breast. This allows for the enlargement of your breasts when your milk comes in. Take nursing pads with you when shopping for a nursing bra for a better fit. Choose a bra that is comfortable when fastened on the loosest row of hooks to allow for shrinkage in your ribcage after pregnancy.
What are maternity panties?
These panties provide support for your enlarging abdomen. Some have panels for your abdomen; others have a wide elastic band that fits under your abdomen to provide support. These panties may be most comfortable in the last trimester of pregnancy.
Will I have to wear medical maternity support stockings?
Most women do not have to wear medical maternity support hose (also called compression hose] during pregnancy. However, if you have a family history of varicose veins or if you develop them during pregnancy, you may need to wear them. You may not be able to depend on over-the-counter support hose. If you need to visit a vein specialist to have maternity support stockings personally fitted, discuss it with your doctor.
Can I wear regular pantyhose?
If you don't have any problems with varicose veins, regular pantyhose are OK. Choose hose with a stretchy, wide, nonbinding waistband. Wear them over or under your abdomen, whichever is more comfortable. You might also be able to buy maternity pantyhose. Look for some wholesale maternity clothing below..
