Pregnancy And Swelling
Body - Pregnancy Changes

Pregnancy And Swelling.

Will my hands and feet swell during my pregnancy?
Swelling during pregnancy is caused by your body producing as much as 50% more blood and fluids to meet your baby's needs. Some of this extra fluid leaks into your body tissues. When your enlarging uterus pushes on pelvic veins, it partially blocks blood flow in the lower part of your body. This pushes fluid into your legs and feet, causing swelling.

If your hands swell and it's uncomfortable to wear your rings, put them on a pretty chain and wear them around your neck, or put them on a bracelet.

My feet are huge I can't wear any of my shoes. What can I do?
Some swelling in your feet is normal during pregnancy. Wear sneakers, flats or shoes with low heels (no higher than 2 inches). If swelling becomes extreme, especially during the last trimester, consult your doctor; it could be a sign of problems. Rest lying down on your side as frequently as possible. A woman's feet may increase half a shoe size during pregnancy, so you may need to buy larger shoes.

I've heard that lying on my side in the 3rd trimester will help with swelling. Is this true?
Yes, it is. By the 3rd trimester, your uterus is quite large and puts a lot of pressure on your blood vessels, which blocks their flow. Lying or sleeping or your side during the 3rd trimester helps relieve this pressure.
