Pregnancy And Backaches.I've heard that backaches are a normal part of pregnancy. What causes them? Nearly every woman experiences backache at some time during pregnancy. It usually occurs as you get bigger. You may also experience backache after walking, bending, lifting, standing or excessive exercise. Be careful about lifting and bending. Do it correctly: Squat and lift with your legs.
How do I take care of problems with my back? You can treat backache with heat, rest and analgesics, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Special maternity girdles can provide some support. Keep your weight under control, and participate in mild exercise, such as swimming, walking or stationary-bike riding. Lie on your side when resting or sleeping. Should I be concerned about lower-back pain? Lower-back pain is common during pregnancy, but it could be an indication of a more serious problem, such as pyelonephritis or a kidney stone. If pain becomes constant or more severe, call your doctor.
WAYS TO AVOID BACKACHES If you experience backaches, try the following suggestions to help prevent them. - Exercise to strengthen stomach, arm and thigh muscles.
- Do your Kegel exercises (ask your doctor for more information).
- Stand correctly-tuck your pelvis under and hold your shoulders back.
- Lift correctly place feet shoulder-width apart, under your buttocks. Bend at the knees; lift with arms and legs, not your back!
- Get up and move around often. Don't stand or sit in the same place for a long time.
- Stretch muscles to keep them limber.
- Be sure your mattress supports you correctly.
- Sleep on your left side with a pillow between your knees to align legs. Many pillows on the market are designed especially for this purpose.
- Get out of bed slowly, swinging both legs to the floor and pushing up with your arms. Don't twist.
- Take a warm (not hot) bath.
- Get a massage.
