Constipation
Body - Pregnancy Changes

Constipation.

I've never had problems with constipation before. Why do I have it now?
It is common during pregnancy for bowel habits to change. Most women notice an increase in constipation, often accompanied by irregular bowel habits and an increased occurrence of hemorrhoids. These problems are usually the result of a slowdown in the movement of food through the gastrointestinal system and iron supplements or iron in prenatal vitamins.

What can I do to relieve constipation?
Increase your fluid intake, and exercise 3 to 4 times a week. Many doctors suggest prune or apple juice or a mild laxative, such as milk of magnesia. Eat foods that are high in fiber, such as bran and prunes; they increase the bulk in your diet and may help relieve constipation.

Can I take laxatives to relieve the constipation?
Do not use laxatives, other than those mentioned above, without consulting your doctor. If your constipation is a continuing problem, discuss it at a prenatal visit.
