Baby Movement quickening
Body - Pregnancy Changes

Baby Movement Quickening.

My friend was talking about quickening. What is it?
Quickening is feeling your baby move. It usually occurs between 16 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.

I'm 15 weeks' pregnant and felt my baby move already. Is there something wrong?
The first time a woman feels her baby move is different for every woman. It can also be different from one pregnancy to another. One baby may be more active than another, so you feel movement sooner.

I thought I felt my baby move when I was 11 weeks' pregnant, but my doctor said it probably was gas. How will I know that what I feel is my baby moving?
Many women describe the first feelings of movement from their baby as a gas bubble or fluttering in their abdomen. It may be something you notice for a few days before you realize what it is. Movements will be more common and occur fairly frequently that's how you'll know that what you're feeling is your baby moving. The movement will be below your bellybutton. If it's your first baby, it may be 19 or 20 weeks before you are sure you feel movement.

I'm in the early part of my second trimester, and I haven't felt my baby move yet. Is that OK?
Yes, it's all right. The normal time to feel movement is between 16 and 20 weeks.

I just felt my baby move for the first time last week but haven't felt it for a couple of days. What's wrong?
Probably nothing. It is normal not to feel it every day at first. As your baby grows, movements become stronger and more regular.

A pregnant friend complains that her baby moves all the time. My baby doesn't move that much. Should I be worried?
This is a hard question to answer. Your sensation of your baby moving is different from your friend's, and the movement of every baby is different. It isn't unusual for one baby to move less than another. If your baby has been very active, then is very quiet for a while, you may want to discuss it with your doctor, who will determine if there is any concern.

My baby is extremely active during the night, and it keeps me awake. Is there anything I can do about it?
There really isn't much you can do about this. Try changing your position in bed. Avoid exercising just before bed it may cause your baby to move more. If these tips don't work, you may have to be patient and just endure it until your baby is born.

My baby kicks a lot, and it hurts. Is there anything I can do to make it stop?
Try changing your position, or lie on your side. It still may be uncomfortable. Taking acetaminophen or relaxing in a warm (not hot) bath may also help.

I get a sort of pain under my ribs sometimes when my baby is active. Can I do anything about it?
Try lying on your opposite side. For example, if you feel pressure under your right ribs, lie on your left side.

A friend of mine is 26 weeks' pregnant. Her doctor wants her to keep track of her baby's movements. Why?
A doctor may have a mother-to-be monitor her baby's movements around this time if she has had a difficult pregnancy, if she had a previous stillbirth or if she has a medical condition, such as diabetes. Recording movements at certain times each day may provide the doctor with additional information about the status of the fetus. Between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus can move between 200 and 500 times a day, including kicking, rolling or wiggling.

My doctor said my baby is floating. What did he mean?
This means the baby can be felt at the beginning of the birth canal, but it has not dropped into the birth canal. That is, the baby is not engaged (fixed) in the birth canal at this time. The baby may even move away from your doctor's fingers when you are examined.

I feel as though my baby is going to fall out. This can't happen, can it?
No, it can't. What you are probably experiencing is the pressure of your baby as it moves lower in the birth canal. Bring it to your doctor's attention. He or she may want to do a pelvic exam to check
how low the baby's head is.
