Epilepsy and Seizures While Pregnant. Epilepsy and seizure while pregnant includes several different problems. There are different kinds of seizures, called grand mal and petit mal seizures. A mother-to-be with epilepsy has a 1 in 30 chance of having a baby with a seizure disorder. Babies also have a higher chance of birth defects, perhaps related to medications taken for epilepsy during pregnancy. If you take medication for epilepsy, it is important to consult your healthcare provider before you become pregnant. Discuss the amounts and the types of medication you take. Some medications are safe during pregnancy. Most doctors will have you switch to phenobarbital during the time you are trying to conceive and while you are pregnant. Seizures can be dangerous to the mother and fetus. It is important for you to take your medication regularly and as prescribed by your caregiver. Do not decrease or discontinue any medication on your own!
