Umbilical Cord Problems.
My friend's baby had knots in his umbilical cord. What causes this? We believe umbilical-cord knots form as the baby moves around early in pregnancy. A loop forms in the umbilical cord; when the baby moves through the loop, a knot forms. I've heard that the baby can get tangled up in the umbilical cord. Is this true? In some cases this is true, but it usually isn't a problem. There is nothing you can do to prevent this from happening.
Could a tangled cord hurt my baby? It isn't necessarily a problem. It only becomes a problem if the cord is stretched tightly around the neck or another part of the body, or in a tight knot. Is there anything I can do to keep my baby from getting a knot in its umbilical cord? No, there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Be reassured that these knots do not occur often.
